Architects of America: We are people who make great places.

This is my favorite description of my profession. Plain and simple, but it sums it up rather well. I am so grateful for this site. It will give all of us, woman architects and interns a chance to express ourselves. I hope this is not going to be one of those projects that I start, grow bored with, and leave to hang out in cyberspace. I have no idea why anyone would care to hear my ramblings on starting out in this profession (almost 8 years out of school), in a mid-size mid-Western town. Most likely would not. (this is definitely a sentence fragment!) I just like to play online and vent sometimes!!!

I have lived in this town for 5 years now and have grown to love it and gotten to know many other young, talented, dedicated woman in architecture. Today, I am proud to have selected this career path for me. Talked to me 6 years ago, not so much! Low pay, egos to work through, not very much respect. I am glad I survived all of that though, late hours in architecture school, first internships, working 80+ during those internships!!

Love it that we have this site, again!

  1. Beautiful quote. I agree that an architect should be more of a sculptor of space, not just a creator of mass. Wouldn't it be wonderful if every architect considered all of the 5 senses not only sight, but smell, touch, taste, and sound? It's in the details...and it's backing up and looking at the big picture...and what about sloping forms, organic forms, curving forms, interesting spaces, framed views, do we think of these things anymore?...Loving design, learning about the realities of our profession...intern level architect, testing for ARE, with almost 5 years experience...

Hopefully these ramblings will inspire us & help us to visualize our potential. Let's enjoy every minute of being women architects!

  2. Hi everyone! I too am thankful for this blog. It's great to have a semi-private place to type, vent, express. I moved here in 1991 after I graduated, so I'm in the older crowd with 17 years of experience (hence the name "tsquaregal" and yes, I used one in school and for the ARE). I love this place, and despite recent explorations to move elsewhere, decided to stay here. I will say that it grows on you.

I love the energy that I have already seen in our first few meetings as WIA - it is very inspiring for all ages. The concept of mentoring has not gone out of style, especially for architecture. I'm happy to be able to contribute and share experiences. Thanks!
